Josiah Cook is the face of the church his wife, Rachel, the backbone. Lucy has just one long weekend to determine what happened in this secretive, tight-knit community strongly influenced by a church sect that shuns government interference. Eliza, from remote Knox Hollow, ID, has traveled far and asked for Lucy by name. In Seattle, FBI Special Agent Lucy Thorne looks at Eliza Cook, a seemingly delicate teen who just confessed to the stabbing murder of 12-year-old Noah Dawson. Labuskes skillfully ratchets up the suspense. As Lucy probes further, she realizes the town's citizens aren't who they seem, and she has no idea whom to trust. One of Eliza's best friends, Molly Thomas, has gone missing, and in the past other people, all members of the True Believers of Christ Church, have also disappeared. What Eliza discovers at Knox Hollow is more than just a simple murder. Lucy's superior gives her the weekend to see whether her instincts are correct. She wonders why Eliza traveled more than five hours to report the murder rather than inform local authorities. But something doesn't feel right to Lucy. She tells Lucy the body's location and that alongside the victim is the knife that killed Noah and was used to carve a psalm into his skin. At the start of this cleverly plotted mystery from Labuskes (Girls of Glass), teenager Eliza Cook presents herself at Seattle FBI headquarters, asks for agent Lucy Thorne, and confesses to murdering 12-year-old Noah Dawson in Knox Hollow, Idaho. The special effects, make up, and costumes are superb, and not only truly capture the otherworldly nature of the denizens of the heavens but take the time to occasionally poke at the ridiculousness of it all. American Born Chinese can be seen as a sort of young adult novel version of Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, and while it doesn’t quite reach the same Oscar-worthy status, it does fully embrace that movie’s spirit of having a complete lack of shame in every motion it makes and the myriad places it draws from.īut what about those motions? With everything built around the magical, the mystical, and the martial arts, those elements needed to be rock-solid – and they very much are. A solid chunk of the dialogue is spoken in Mandarin, Wuxia (Chinese martial arts historical fantasy) influence is everywhere, there’s at least one fight every episode, Beijing Opera and Eastern epic-inspired presentations, and comics and manga are important factors in the plot. It clearly has something to say about the Chinese-American/universal immigrant experience while also being a martial arts coming-of-age tale, meaning it jumps head-first into East Asian storytelling ideas and elements. First and foremost, this is an unapologetically bold show. It was not written beforehand and I was mostly just riffing on my thoughts after having recently finished reading the book without getting into any of the story or plot details. First, this was an impromptu, somewhat improvisational review. You will notice that the video has been heavily edited and the reasons for that are two fold. The idea stuck with Windsor-Smith and he turned it into an epic 365 page graphic novel that worked on over the span of 30 years.Ĭheck out the video review here. For those that don’t know, Monsters began as an idea in the mid 1980’s for The Incredible Hulk that ultimately did not materialize. Instead of a creator interview, I review Barry Windsor-Smith’s first published book in 16 years, Monsters. I have something a little different for the podcast today. I hope you love Mungo and the dysfunctional Hamilton family as much as I do. Said Stuart himself in a video for Waterstones Bookstore and on Twitter, “ Young Mungo was a book that I actually began writing long before Shuggie was published and finished before Shuggie was nominated for the Booker, so I hope you’ll find it comes from that very personal space. Young Mungo is a gripping and revealing story about the bounds of masculinity, the push and pull of family, the violence faced by many queer people, and the dangers of loving someone too much. And yet against all odds Mungo and James become best friends as they find a sanctuary in the pigeon dovecote that James has built for his prize racing birds. Their environment is a hyper-masculine and sectarian one, for gangs of young men and the violence they might dole out dominate the Glaswegian estate where they live. Douglas Stuart finds beauty in horrible things in ‘Young Mungo’ The Scottish author, who won the Booker Prize for his debut ‘Shuggie Bain,’ goes back to the poverty and struggle of 1980s. Born under different stars-Mungo a Protestant and James a Catholic-they should be sworn enemies if they’re to be seen as men at all. Reads the synopsis, in part:įive years in the writing, Young Mungo is a vivid portrayal of working-class life and a deeply moving and highly suspenseful story of the dangerous first love of two young men: Mungo and James. Fresh off Shuggie Bain’s Booker win, Douglas Stuart has announced his new novel, Young Mungo, is forthcoming from Grove (US), Knopf Canada, and Picador (UK), in April 2022.Īside from having an incredibly sticky title, Young Mungo is promised to be a wrenching love story set against the working-class housing estates on Glasgow’s East End. |
